The law can seem pretty mysterious if you are not a lawyer, and lots of writing about it is, well, a bit inaccessible.  There are surprising exceptions.  Maira Kalman is an artist who wrote and illustrated a wonderful piece for the New York Times called “May It Please the Court” after visiting the U.S. Supreme Court and meeting with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. 

It is hard to summarize, but it contains nice insights about the law, pioneering women, and courage.  A friend passed it along to me, and I encourage you to take a look if you haven’t seen it.  I loved it.  I was not familiar with Kalman, but her art is bright and wonderfully expressive, and its simplicity communicates so much.  It turns out she also has illustrated an edition of Strunk and White’s Elements of Style, which breathes life into that classic work.  One of the things we do at the School is write about the law in ways that are accessible, and we do it without losing the complexity.  We have talented writers, editors, and designers.  Now, if we could just persuade Kalman to illustrate some of our books.
